Audience Appeal Earns 4-H'ers Awards at Iowa State Fair

Iowa County 4-H'ers earned recognition this week as communicators at the Iowa State Fair.

4-H'ers compete in three categories of oral communication -- educational presentations, working exhibits, extemporaneous speaking -- and one in visual communication. In educational presentations, the 4-H'ers teach their audience about a topic they selected and researched. In working exhibits, the 4-H'ers invite passers-by to try a skill they demonstrate. In extemporaneous speaking, the 4-H'ers prepare a speech in 30 minutes and deliver it to an audience. In poster communication, the 4-H'er conveys a message visually.

"Almost any time fairgoers come into the 4-H Exhibits Building they can learn from a 4-H'er participating in a communications activity," said Mitchell Hoyer, program coordinator for Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. "Effective communication means appealing to the interests of your audience."

"Many work situations require the ability to demonstrate a skill while instructing others who are learning the skill," Hoyer said. "4-H'ers frequently practice this skill as they present information at club meetings and county fairs."

"Throughout their working lives, 4-H'ers will find that most workplace speaking situations call for extemporaneous delivery skills," Hoyer said. "In 4-H youth prepare for typical face-to-face contact in which the speaker and listeners are simultaneously sending, interpreting, generating and receiving messages."

"Billboards, television, newspapers, the Internet -- the need to visually communicate effectively faces us each day. The poster class helps members improve layout and design skills as they interpret a promotional message about 4-H," Hoyer said.

Iowa County 4-H'ers Wins Clothing Awards

Lana Miller and Mary Schmidt of Iowa County earned top 10 percent recognition in Fashion Revue and $15 Challenge during the 4-H Clothing Event at the 2009 Iowa State Fair. The award also includes a $25 gift certificate.

Miller also earned special recognition for an outstanding constructed garment modeled during the Fashion Revue. The Ames/Central Iowa Sewing Guild sponsors the $25 cash award.

The 4-H Clothing Event has three categories: Clothing Selection, in which a participant purchases an outfit; Fashion Revue, in which the clothing is constructed by the participant; and the $15 Challenge, in which the 4-H’er puts together an outfit for $15 or less from garage sales, consignment shops or clothing resale stores such as Goodwill or Salvation Army.

"4-H'ers can learn to master several skills through clothing projects,” said Mary Kaiser, Iowa County Youth Coordinator.

"Counties send many beautiful examples of skill mastery in clothing categories," said Sue Bogue, coordinator of the Clothing Event for Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. “4-H'ers also gain general knowledge about garment fit and construction, body types, and design elements and principles applied to clothing.”

The $15 Challenge encourages 4-H’ers to explore new shopping venues in their communities for economical, reused and refashioned clothing, Bogue said.

4-H’ers receive recognition based on how well they meet goals in their written reports, on their modeling of the garments and on their conference with judges, Bogue added.

"We are very proud of the accomplishments of these youth and the learning represented in this program," said Chuck Morris, ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development director.

4-H'ers Perform at the Iowa State Fair

Iowa County 4-H'ers performed during the Share-the-Fun event in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair. Share-the-fun participants perform vocal or instrumental music, dance, humorous skits, monologues and specialty acts.

"Performers receive evaluation comments from a judge, but are not ranked," said Mitchell Hoyer, program coordinator for Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. "The purpose of the show is to entertain the audience and have fun while you're doing it."

About 100 youth perform each day of the fair, according to Mitchell Hoyer, program coordinator for Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. "Our judges give skill-building pointers in several areas including presence, performance techniques and interpretation."
