Everyone gets a pass. I had absolutely no idea where the stone compass was as pictured in the last Where in East Iowa. Not even Laura Timm knew exactly where it was - and she took the freakin’ picture!
Fortunately, Jim Hansen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources was able to help - the compass is located along the Cedar Cliff Trail at Palisades-Kepler State Park. According to Hansen the compass had been replaced around 15 years ago and although he said it seems as though the directions aren’t quite correct, he has verified them with a real compass.
So - since hardly anyone knows where the thing is, chances are if you encounter it, you’ll be lost. The good news is that it’s a compass - and it can help you find your way!
Yep, it was bound to happen but no one other than the good Mr. Hansen knew where the thing was.
This week, we have something a bit more urbane. It’s the kind of thing that may well make you think, “Gee, I’ve seen that before… where in East Iowa is it?” Indeed, that is my question: Where in East Iowa is this?
Send your guess to P.O. Box 336, Victor, Iowa, 52347 or email where@eiherald.com. I guess we should offer bonus points for knowing the direction - particularly if you used a stone compass.
