An ongoing construction project will greet students at HLV School for their first day of classes on Aug. 20. Fortunately the construction should have a negligible effect on students.
Prior to the big day, HLV will hold an open house for kindergarten through eighth grade students on Aug. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. The open house will give students and their parents the opportunity to learn about class schedules, meet teachers, ask questions and, of upmost importance, find lockers for the upcoming school year.
The first day of school will begin with a flag raising program at 8:25 a.m. for junior and senior high school students. A similar program for elementary schools students will immediately follow.
Parents and students should note that classes will dismiss one hour early on Aug. 20 through Aug. 22.
HLV football began practice on Monday, the first regular season game will take place on the road against Belle Plaine. The home opener will be on Sept. 5 against Iowa Valley. That game is also Parents Night.
HLV cross country will take part in their first meet on Sept. 2 in Williamsburg. The first girls varsity volleyball game will be at Belle Plaine on Sept. 10.
Parents and students are able to obtain in-depth information about all school activities and student grades through Centerpoint Online. A link is available on the HLV School Website at www.hlv.k12.ia.us. Information about school lunch accounts is also available from the school Website. For seniors, the site also has information about visits from college representatives and scholarships.
And for those students hoping to slowly ease into the new school year, the first holiday will be Labor Day on Sept. 1.
