Warriors Down 8th Ranked New London to End Regular Season

The HLV Warrior football team completed an outstanding regular season by defeating the 8th ranked New London Tigers 27-14 in non-district action Friday night in Victor. The win left the Warriors with an overall record of 7-2, which is especially impressive when you consider the Warriors faced 6 opponents who qualified for post-season play.

The Warriors began Friday night’s game with a lineup that featured nearly every Senior on the team and that group got the Warriors off to a great start. After taking over at their own 40 yard line, the Warriors quickly drove down the field. Bryce Hasley capped the drive with a 25 yard touchdown run. The extra point kick was missed and the Warriors had an early 6-0 lead. On the next HLV possession, the Warriors mounted another impressive drive. Hasley scored on a 5 yard run to give HLV a 12-0 lead. Hasley ran in the 2 point conversion and the Warriors led 14-0 after one period of play. The Warrior offense continued to roll in the 2nd period, with Bryce Kuesel scoring on a 2 yard run after another long HLV drive. Hasley kicked the extra point to give the Warriors a 21-0 lead midway through the 2nd period. New London then scored late in the period to cut the HLV lead to 21-7 at the half.

The second half started well for the Warriors as Scott Blomme blocked a Tiger punt in New London territory. The Warriors were unable to take advantage of the good field position and the Tigers took over. Both teams struggled to move the ball in the 3rd period, but the Warriors began to move the ball late in the quarter. Jake Burns scored on a 18 yard run with two minutes left in the quarter and the Warriors led 27-7 after the extra point was blocked. The Tigers answered the Warrior score with a long touchdown pass to cut the Warrior lead to 27-14 with nine minutes to play. A Burns interception deep in HLV territory ended the final Tiger drive and the Warriors ran out the clock to pick up the win.

"I was really pleased with our effort," said HLV coach Kevin Smith. "We played a complete game on offense and defense. We were able to take away a lot of what they wanted to do. I thought both our offensive and defensive lines played well."

The Warriors finished the night with 20 first downs and 343 yards in total offense, including 310 yards rushing. Burns led the Warriors with 132 yards on 17 carries. Jon Faga rushed 15 times for 102 yards, while Hasley had 81 yards on 12 carries. Bryce Kuesel was 3 of 9 passing for 33 yards. Blomme had one catch for 22 yards, while Faga caught one pass for 12 yards.

The HLV defense held the Tigers to 178 yards in total offense, including -14 in rushing yards. The Warriors ended the night with 12 tackles for loss. Burns led the Warriors with seven tackles and also intercepted a pass. Alex Schnebbe and Tyler Dietrich both finished with five tackles.

Burns also had a strong night on special teams, returning one kick-off for 34 yards and two punts for 13 yards. Hasley averaged 34 yards on six punts, while Brenden Kuesel averaged 22 yards on five kick-offs.

The Warriors begin post-season play by hosting Lone Tree in a sub-state game on Wednesday night a 7:00 p.m. The Lions finished the regular season with a 6-3 record and placed 3rd in district 5.

"They are a vastly improved team over the Lone Tree teams we played the previous 2 years in district play," said Smith. "They have a good group of Seniors who are finally seeing some success. We expect it to be a very good game."

If the Warriors win, they will take on the winner of the New London vs. BGM game on Monday at a site to be determined.

Warriors Open Regional Play with Win Over GMG

The HLV volleyball team began post-season play with a 3-0 win over GMG last Wednesday night in Victor. The game scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-23.

"I felt we really came out clicking," said HLV coach Rod Cooling. "Everyone seemed to be on the same page and we did a great job of communicating."

The Warrior offense was led by Sarah Smith with 10 kills, while Chelsea Gryp added 8. Tiff Roberts had a good night setting, finishing with 23 assists. Smith was 13 of 14 serving with 2 aces, while Lauren Robinson was 7 of 8 with 3 aces. On defense, Smith led the Warriors with 9 digs. Jade Cooling added 7 digs. Cooling, Gryp, Crystal McClenathan and Michelle McWilliams all recorded 1 block.

The Warriors faced 2nd ranked Don Bosco last night in Victor in the next round of regional play. A complete story about last nights game will appear in the next issue of the East Iowa Herald.
