Warriors Edge BGM in First Round Playoff Game

The HLV Warrior football team picked up a thrilling 30-27 first round playoff win over BGM is Brooklyn on Monday night. The win improved the Warrior record to 9-2, while the Bears ended their season with a 6-5 record. The Warriors will now travel to Traer to take on North Tama Friday night at 7:00. The Redhawks won at North Mahaska on Monday night and will bring an 11-0 record into Friday nights game.
The Warriors took the opening kickoff and drove deep into BGM territory. The drive stalled and Bryce Hasley kicked a 22 yard field goal to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Jon Faga capped a Warrior drive early in the second period with a 5 yard touchdown run and Hasley's extra point kick gave the Warriors a 10-0 lead. The Bears then completed a drive with a short touchdown run to cut the HLV lead to 10-6. Faga then scored on a bruising 16 yard touchdown run to increase the HLV lead to 16-6. After a Bear turnover late in the 2nd period, Bryce Kuesel hit Jake Burns on a 32 yard touch pass to give the Warriors a 23-6 half-time lead.
Early in the second half, the Bears returned a Warrior fumble for a touchdown to cut the HLV lead to 23-13. The Bears then completed a long touchdown pass on a trick play to pull to within 23-20. The Warriors then mounted a drive early in the final quarter. The drive ended when Scott Blomme alertly recovered a Warrior fumble in the end zone for an HLV touchdown. Hasley kicked the extra point and the Warriors led 30-20. The Bears then drove down field and scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 30-27 with 5 minutes left in the game. The Warrior defense then shut down the Bears and the Warriors held on for the hard fought win.
The Warrior offense finished the night with 277 yards in offense, including 221 yards rushing. Faga led the Warriors with 119 yards on 19 carries. Hasley rushed 19 times for 97 yards. Kuesel was 4 of 7 passing for 56 yards. Burns caught 2 passes for 42 yards, while Grant Hinrichs had 2 catches for 14 yards.
The Warrior defense held the Bears to 210 yards in total offense. Tyler Dietrich led the Warriors with 8 tackles, including 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss. Burns was involved in 7 tackles. Hinrichs, Sheldon Gryp and Preston Warnick all recovered fumbles for the Warriors.
Friday nights quarterfinal game will be a rematch of an early season District 6 game that North Tama won 20-0. The winner of Friday nights game will advance to the semifinal round to face the winner of East Buchanon-Northwood Kenseth game on Saturday, November 15 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.
Warriors Open Post-Season Play with Win Over Lone Tree
Behind a powerful rushing attack that rolled up 390 yards, the HLV warriors football team cruised to a 44-9 win over Lone Tree in Class A sub-state action Wednesday night in Victor. The Warriors will now travel to Brooklyn to take on the BGM Bears in a first round playoff game Monday night. The Warriors bring on a 8-2 record into the game, while the Bears are 6-4.
After Lone Tree took advantage of an early HLV turnover to take a 7-0 lead, the Warrior offense took charge. The Warriors answered the Lion touchdown with a long drive, completed by a 7 yard touchdown run. The extra point kick was blocked and the Warriors trailed 7-6. After a Warrior defensive stop, Hasley broke loose on a 74 yard touchdown run. The 2 point conversion try failed and the Warriors led 12-7 after the first period of play.
The Warrior special teams then made two big plays early in the second period. After the Warriors blocked a Lions punt deep in Lone Tree territory, Jon Faga scored on a 5 yard run. The extra point try failed and the Warriors led 18-7. On the ensuing kick-off the Lions could not handle the squib kick and Preston Warnick recovered the ball for the Warriors. Faga completed the short HLV drive with another 5 yard run and the Warriors led 24-7 after a failed 2 point conversion attempt. Late in the second period, Faga scored his 3rd touchdown of the half on a 3 yard run and the Warriors took a 31-7 lead into the half-time break.
The Warrior offense continued to roll in the second half, with Jake Burns scoring on a 8 yard run midway through the period. The extra point attempt failed and the Warrior lead was 37-7. Sheldon Gryp completed the HLV scoring late in the quarter on a 14 yard touchdown run and Hasley's extra point kick gave the Warriors a 44-7 lead at the end of 3 quarters. A Lone Tree safety late in the game made the final score 44-9.
The Warrior offense ended the night with 411 yards in total offense. Hasley led the rushing attack with 164 yards on 14 carries. Burns gained 101 yards on 9 carries, while Faga had 89 yards on 9 carries. Bryce Kuesel was 4 of 6 passing for 17 yards. Burns was the top Warrior receiver with 3 catches for 12 yards.
The Warrior defense held Lone Tree to 252 yards in total offense. Tyler Dietrich led the Warriors with 13 tackles, including 2 for loss. Warnick was in on 10 stops, while Grant Hinrichs, Drew Schultz and Gryp each recorded 7 tackles. Warnick also recoved 2 fumbles, while Gryp and Clint McClenathan each had 1 fumble recovery.
The Warrior special teams also had another good night. Brenden Kuesel averaged 35 yards on 8 kick-offs, while Hasley averaged 40 yards on 2 punts. Burns averaged 19 yards on 2 punt returns, while Angus Gryp returned 1 kick-off for 23 yards.
The BGM game will be a rematch of District 6 game in which the Warriors won 3-0. "It should be fun," said HLV coach Kevin Smith. "Its a good rivalry and both teams are playing well. It should be a real good ballgame."
Second Ranked Don Bosco Ends Warrior Volleyball Season
The HLV volleyball team saw its season come to an end last Tuesday night in Victor in regional second round match against Don Bosco. The Dons won the match 3-0. The game scores were 13-25, 11-25, and 16-25. HLV ended the year with an overall record of 13-11 and placed 2nd in the SICL with a 7-3 mark.
In the Don Bosco match, Sarah Smith led the Warrior offense with 5 kills. Crystal McClenathan, Paige Simmons and Chelsea Gryp had 2 each. Tiff Roberts finished the night with 12 assists. Gryp was 9 of 9 serving with 2 aces, while Paige Simmons was 9 of 10 and also had 2 aces. Gryp led the Warriors with 3 blocks, while Smith, Gryp, McClenathan, Michelle McWilliams and Jade Cooling all had 3 digs.
"I was not disappointed with how we played," said HLV coach Rod Cooling. "We played with a lot of intensity even when we were behind. Don Bosco was a very sound team on both offense and defense."
Tuesday nights match was the final high school match for Warrior Seniors Crystal McClenathan, Michelle McWilliams and Sarah Smith. "Our seniors will be missed," said Cooling. "They provided leadership and worked hard throughout their careers. I was happy they ended their final year with a winning season."
Eight Warriors Named to All-SICL Volleyball Teams
Following a solid season in which they placed 2nd in the conference, the HLV Warrior volleyball team had 8 players receive All-Conference honors. Senior Sarah Smith and freshman Chelsea Gryp were both named to the 1st team. Junior setter Tiff Roberts along with senior Michelle McWilliams and Jade Cooling were named to the 2nd team.
Warriors named to the honorable mention team were senior Crystal McClenathan, junior Sarah Hafner and sophomore Paige Simmons.
