Warriors roll at English Valleys Jamboree
The HLV boy's basketball team traveled to North English on Monday night to take part in the EV Jamboree. The Warriors took on Columbus Junction and cruised to a 37-13 win.
Scott Blomme and Sheldon Gryp both scored 8 points to lead the Warriors. Jake Burns added 7 points while Jon Faga had 6. Blomme led the Warriors with 6 rebounds.

"I thought we played a very good half of basketball," said HLV Coach Zach Tremmel. "We played hard and did a lot of things well."
The Warriors open the regular season at Sigourney on December 2nd.
HLV Girls Win Season Opener at Montezuma
The 2008-2009 girls basketball season at HLV got off to a great start as the Warriors picked up a hard fought 48-41 win at Montezuma on Friday night. HLV Coach Steve Sye was happy with his teams opening night performance. "This was a very good win in our first game of the year," said Seye. "We talked about being patient on offense and we were able to get a lot of good shots. Our defense was also a big factor in the win."
Montezuma used good 3 point shooting in the early going to grab an early lead and the Braves hled a 10-7 lead at the end of the first period. The Braves would build their advantage to 7 points late in the 2nd period, but the Warriors would cut the Montezuma lead to 22-19 at the half-time break.
The Warriors came out on fire to start the second half. An 11-2 HLV run gave the Warriors a 30-24 lead midway through the 3rd period. They continued to play well and haeld a 35-30 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Braves would begin to cut into the Warrior lead and would tie the game at 40 with 4 minutes to play. The Warriors would outscore the Braves 8-1 the rest of the way to pull out the 48-41 win.
The Warriors were led in scoring by Crystal McClenathan with 17 points. She also grabbed 6 rebounds. Misty Schafbuch had 16 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Shelly McWillimas had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Sarah Smith had 5 points and 3 steals. Emily Kriegel had 4 points and 4 rebounds, while Paige Simmons had 2 points, 4 assists and 3 blocked shots.
After hosting Belle Plaine on November 25th, the Warriors return action after the Thanksgiving break with a game at Sigourney on Tuesday December 2nd.
HLV Holds Fall Sports Banquet
Following a very successful fall sports season, the HLV Warriors held their annual fall sports banquet on November 19th. Cross Country Coach Jenny Cronbaugh began the night by talking about her teams season. She awarded letters to Josh Foster, Cecilia Hagen, Anthony Lynn, Carlin Michalek, Louis Sughroue, Ashley Vesely, Krystal Wade and Anai Williams. Both the girls and boys teams received Academic All-State awards.
Cheerleading Coach Patty Dentel then handed out her awards. The team received the Distinguished Academic Award from the state. Named to the All-District Academic team were Abbey Dentel, Erin DeRycke, Tricia Glotfelty, Jessica Seaton and Sarah Smith. Smith was named Most Valuable Cheerleader and was also chosen as an All-State Cheerleader. She will perform at the Boy's State Basketball Tournament in March. Smith and Seaton will also be traveling to London over the holidays to perform. Seaton was picked Most Versatile Cheerleader. Candace Pierce was named Most Spirited while Emily Schaefer was named Most Improved. Smith, DeRycke and Jade Cooling were chosen to perform at the state football championships last Saturday.
Volleyball coach Rod Cooling then presented his teams awards. The team received the Academic All-State Award. The Warriors also had 11 team members named to the SICL All-Academic Team. Named to the team were Abbey Dentel, Erin DeRycke, Tricia Glotfelty, Tiff Gray, Chelsea Gryp, Sarah Hafner, Crystal McClenathan, Candace Pierce, Morgan Schafbuch, Jess Seaton, and Sarah Smith. Team awards went to Chelsea Gryp as outstanding performer and offensive player of the year. Jade Cooling received defensive player of the year and the enthusiasm award. The most improved player award went to Sarah Hafner. The hustle award was given to Michelle McWilliams. Sarah Smith earned the leadership award, while the coaches appreciation award went to Morgan Schafbuch.
Warrior football coach Kevin Smith then gave out his awards. The football team also earned the Academic All-State Award. Warriors named to this award are Scott Blomme, Jacob Bringman, Jeffrey Craig, Boone DeBrower, Dustin Deppe, Jon Faga, William Glotflety, Grant Hinrichs, Dillon McClenathan, Brian Scandridge, Jacob Schafbuch, Jacob Schaefer, Jordan Smith and Preston Warnick. Jake Burns picked up a number of team awards, including the senior leadership award, best attitude, hardest worker, most valuable offensive player, co-captain award and Warrior award. Jon Faga earned the most likely to succeed in college award and co-captain award. Other leadership awards went to Dillon McClenathan, Bryce Kuesel and Alex Schnebbe. Brad Craig was named most improved player. Tyler Dietrich was chosen defensive player of the year, while Bryce Hasley was named team MVP.
HLV Booster Club Named Class 1A Booster Club of the Year
The Iowa Athletic Directors Association has named the HLV Booster Club the Class 1A Booster Club of the Year. The award was presented Saturday at the State Booster Club Convention, which was held at the Hilton Gardens Hotel in Johnston.
HLV Booster Club president Laurel Hollopeter and club treasurer Karla Cheney, along with AD Cory Lahndorf accepted the award. Hollopeter credited the whole community for helping the club win this years award.
