The 2008 HLV football season came to an end on a cold, snowy night in Traer as the North Tama Redhawks handed the Warriors a 19-0 loss last Friday night. The Warriors ended the year with an overall record of 9-3. The 12-0 Redhawks will now face Northwood-Kensett in the Class A semi-final game on Saturday at 10:30 in the UNI Dome.
Friday nights game began as a defensive struggle, with the teams exchanging punts in the early going. Late in the 1st quarter, Redhawk running back Dylan Youel shed two Warrior tacklers in the backfield and raced 50 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was missed and North Tama led 6-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. Jake Burns then returned a Redhawk punt deep into North Tama territory, but on the next play the Redhawks picked off a Warrior pass. North Tama then used their passing game to drive down the field. The Redhawks completed their drive with a touchdown pass and that increased their lead to 12-0. The 2 point conversion try failed and North Tama led midway through the 2nd period. Just before halftime, Burns appeared to stop a Redhawk drive with an interception, but a roughing the passer penalty gave the North Tama a 1st down. The Redhawks then connected on a short touchdown pass and the extra point kick gave the Redhawks a 19-0 halftime lead.
The second half turned into a defensive battle, with the Warriors turning back several Redhawk scoring threats in the 3rd period. The Warrior offense continued to struggle against a very good Redhawk defense and was never able to sustain a drive in the second half. Neither team was able to score in the half and North Tama ended up with a 19-0 win.
The Warrior offense finished with just 108 yards in total offense. Burns led the Warrior rushing game with 32 yards on 10 carries. Jordan Smith had 25 yards on 6 carries. Bryce Kuesel was 3 of 11 passing for 28 yards. Burns had 2 catches for 10 yards, while Jon Faga had 1 catch for 18 yards. Burns led the return game with 51 yards on 2 punt returns.
Tyler Dietrich led the Warrior defense with 11 tackles, including 3 tackles for loss. Sheldon Gryp also had 11 tackles. Preston Warnick and Alex Schnebbe both recorded 8 tackles. Faga finished with 7 tackles, including 2 for loss. Drew Schultz added 6 tackles, including 3 for loss. Grant Hinrichs had 1 fumble recovery.
"I was pleased with how we played in the 2nd half," said Coach Kevin Smith. "I was disappointed with our offensive execution, but you have to give North Tama credit, they are a very solid team."
Friday nights game was the final high school game for HLV seniors Scott Blomme, Jake Burns, Boone DeBrower, Tyler Dietrich, Brian Scandridge, Jon Faga, Bryce Hasley, Grant Hinrichs, Jacob Schaefer and Drew Schultz.
"This group of seniors played a a big part in the success that we have had in the past 3 years," said Smith. "We will really miss the contributions they gave us."
