HLV Girls edge Belle Plaine
The HLV girls basketball team picked up an exciting 46-44 come from behind win over Belle Plaine in Victor on November 25th. The win improved the Warriors record to 2-0.
The Warriors played well in the early going, building a 5 point lead midway through the first period of play. The Plainsmen would heat up late in the quarter, but the Warriors would lead 11-8 after the first period of play. Turnovers and cold shooting would hurt the Warriors in the second period, and the plainsmen would hold a 20-19 advantage at the half-time break.
The game would stay close throughout the 3rd period, with the Plainsmen holding a 29-27 lead with 1 period to play. Belle Plaine came out hot to begin the final period and were up 41-33 with 4 minutes to play. The Plainsmen still held a 6 point lead with 1:37 to play, but the Warriors free throws would cut the Plainsmen lead to 3 with 30 second to go. After the Plainsmen missed a free throw, Misty Schafbuch would tie the score with a 3 pointer with 15 seconds to play. The Plainsmen would hit a free throw to take a 1 point lead, but Schafbuch would tie the score with a free throw with 5 seconds to play. The Warrior press would then force a plainsmen turnover and Schafbuch would hit a lay-up with 1 second left to give the Warriors a thrilling 46-44 win.
Crystal McClenathan led a balanced Warrior offense with 12 points and also had 6 rebounds. Paige Simmons had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Schafbuch had 10 points and 3 steals. Sarah Smith finished the night with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Shelly McWilliams added 3 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
After traveling to Sigourney to take on the Savages on December 2nd, the Warriors will return home to host English Valleys on December 9th.
Burns, Dietrich named to INA All-State Football Team
HLV seniors Jake Burns and Tyler Dietrich were named to the Iowa Newspaper Association All-State football team. Both were selected to the Class A first team defense.
A 5'10" 170 pound defensive back, Burns had 61 tackles and intercepted 5 passes. He also had an outstanding offensive season, rushing for 687 yards and 6 touchdowns and caught 19 passes for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns. As a special teams player, Burns averaged 22 yards on 16 punt returns and 19 yards on 5 kick-off returns.
Dietrich was selected as a defensive lineman. A 6'3" 250 pound tackle, Dietrich led the Warriors with 118 tackles including 21.5 for loss. He recovered 1 fumble and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown. On the offensive side of the ball, Dietrich played tackle and helped 3 Warrior running backs rush for over 600 yards.
Jake is the son of Chris and Teresa Burns and Tyler is the son of Todd and Denise Dietrich.
