HLV youth teams compete in Williamsburg Rec. League

Two HLV elementary basketball teams took part in the Williamsburg Recreation Department youth basketball leagues. The games were held at the Williamsburg Rec Center on Sunday afternoons in November and December. The girls team competed in the 3rd and 4th grade division and finished with a record of 5-1. The boys team also competed in the 3rd and 4th grade division and had a record of 4-1-1.

Both teams will be competing in upcoming AAU tournaments over the next few months. The HLV Booster Club will be hosting a girls youth tournament on March 6th-7th and the boys tournament on March 13th-14th. Both tournaments will feature teams in grades 4th through 6th.

Six Warriors wrestling for IV-HLV

Six HLV athletes are competing for the IV-HLV wrestling team this winter. Senior Grant Hinrichs will wrestle at 189 when he returns from an early season injury after the holiday break. Junior Andrew Foster has performed well at heavyweight in his first season of wrestling. Junior Zach Beatty has wrestled at 189 and 215 in the early going. Junior Nic Zehr has been competing at 152. Sophomore Josh Foster has wrestled at 130, while fellow sophomore Trevor Jack has been competing at heavyweight.

The Tigers are coached by Joe Loftus. He is assisted by Jeremy Kriegel and Adam Hadenfeldt. The SICL championships are January 31st at Tri-County. The Class 2A sectional meet will be February 7th at LaPorte City.

The game comes to an end

It is with much sadness that I end my short-lived sports writing career with this weeks final edition of the Herald. It has been a pleasure to cover the HLV sports program over the past year.

High School athletics play an important role in our community and we are fortunate to have such a strong program. We are blessed with a talented group of hard working student athletes. We have dedicated coaches who put in many long hours to prepare their teams for competition. Our award winning booster club does a great job of raising funds for our program. Our passionate fan base always supports our teams. It is easy to understand why the program has had so much success.

I would like to end by thanking Mitch. When I offered to cover sports for the paper, he did not ask about my experience or credentials. He simply had faith in me and more importantly he had faith in our community. The East Iowa Herald may have not been a success financially, but the positive impact it has had on our community will not be forgotten.
