Warriors Stay Undefeated with Win Over Lynnville-Sully

The seventh-ranked HLV boys basketball team continued their fine early season play by picking up a 53-43 win over Lynnville-Sully on Friday night in Victor. The win improved the Warriors record to 4-0.

Lynnville-Sully would get off to a fast start, building an early 10-5 lead. The Warriors would then go on an 11-2 run to build a 16-12 advantage at the end of the 1st period. The Warriors would maintain their lead through the 2nd quarter and led 25-17 at the end of the 1st half. The HLV lead would grow to 11 in the 3rd period, but the Hawks cut the deficit to 40-32 at the end of the period. The Hawks would pull to within six points in the final period, but the Warriors hit enough free throws down the stretch to earn the win.

"We did a good job with our half-court defense," said HLV coach Zach Tremmel. "This was a good win over an improved Lynnville-Sully team. We met one of our team goals by reaching the Christmas break undefeated."

The Warriors were led by Scott Blomme who scored 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Jon Faga had 10 points and two assists. Jake Burns scored eight points and also had two assists. Brenden Kuesel had another solid game finishing with seven points, three assists and three steals. Bryce Hasley added six points.

The Warriors return to action after the break with three tough road games. The team will travel to Keota on January 6th, North Mahaska on January 7th, and Belle Plaine on January 9th.

Lynnville-Sully Hands HLV Girls Tough Loss

In a battle for 2nd place in the SICL, the Lynnville-Sulley Hawks pulled out a 54-49 win over the HLV Warriors in Victor on Friday night. The loss dropped the Warriors record to 4-2.

The Hawks got off to a fast start, building a 22-11 lead at the end of the 1st period. The Lynnville-Sully lead would grow to 15 early in the 2nd period, but the Warriors battled back to cut the deficit to 31-25 going into the half-time break.

The Warriors continued to play well early in the second half, cutting the Hawk lead to three. Lynnville-Sully would build their lead back to 10 late in the period, but the Warriors ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the Hawk lead to 41-37 with one period to play. The Warriors would finally tie the score midway through the final period but missed a number of opportunities to take the lead. After the Hawks took a 47-45 lead with 3 minutes to play , the Warriors would miss the front end of two one and one free-throw attempts. The Hawks would then hit enough free-throws late to hold on for the win.

"We did not play well early," said HLV coach Steve Seye. "Its tough to come back against a good team like Lynnville-Sully. We were able to come out and play a good second half and get back into the ball game. If we can improve our shooting, I think we are capable of winning a lot of games."

Misty Schafbuch led the Warriors with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Crystal McClenathan had nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Paige Simmons had eight points, four rebounds and two assists. Emily Kriegel came off the bench to score eight points and grab three rebounds. Sarah Smith scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Randi DeBrower finished with four rebounds.
