Warriors down Tigers
VICTOR - The HLV Warrior boy's basketball team jumped on the Iowa Valley Tigers early and pulled away for a 71-30 win on Monday night in Victor. The win lifted the Warriors record to 3-0.
Unlike Friday nights game at BGM, the Warriors came out hot early and built a 19-8 lead after one period of play. The Warriors then extended their advantage to 39-19 at the half-time break. The Warriors would continue to roll in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 32-11 over the final two quarters to pull away for the victory.
"We did a really good job with our half court defense," said HLV coach Zach Tremmel. "We really pushed the ball on offense and did a good job of getting the ball inside to Scott Blomme."
Blomme had another big night, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Jake Burns had 8 points, 3 assists and 4 steals. Brenden Kuesel had 3 points, 4 assists and 6 steals. Drew Schultz ended the night with 8 points and 4 rebounds, while Bryce Hasley scored 8 points.
Warriors grind out win against BGM
The 9th ranked HLV Warrior boy’s basketball team overcame a slow start to pick up a hard fought 62-48 win at BGM on Friday night. The win improved the Warriors record to 2-0.
Following a 10 day lay-off between games because of weather related cancellations, the Warriors struggled in the early going. BGM would jump to an early 10-3 lead and held a 12-7 advantage after one period of play. The Bears would increase their lead to 20-11 midway through the 2nd period, but the Warriors would close the half on a 12-0 run to take a 23-20 halftime lead.
The game would stay close throughout the 3rd period, with the Warriors holding a 39-36 lead with one period to play. The Warriors would then begin to build on their lead in the 4th quarter and would pull away for the win.
“We came out extremely flat tonight and BGM came out ready to play,” said HLV coach Zach Tremmel. “We found ourselves down as many as 9 points in the first half before we finally started to play some team basketball. The second half we played much better and executed on the offensive end to come away with a win.”
Scott Blomme had a big night for the Warriors, finishing the night with 22 points, 12 rebound, 3 assists and 3 blocked shots. Jon Faga also had a big offensive night, scoring 20 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Jake Burns had 7 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Alex Schnebbe came off the bench to score 6 points and grab 4 rebounds, while Brenden Kuesel had 3 points and 5 assists. Bryce Hasley saw his first action of the season Friday night, returning earlier then expected after suffering a knee injury during the football play-offs.
The Warriors will host a very good Lynnville-Sully team on Friday night before taking a two week break over the holidays.
HLV girls hold off Tigers
MARENGO - The HLV girl's basketball team continued their early season success with a 55-45 win over Iowa Valley in Marengo on Monday night. The win lifted the Warriors SICL record to 4-1.
The Warriors started fast, grabbing an early 6-0 lead. The Tigers then went on a 7-0 run to claim the lead, but the Warriors would quickly reclaim the lead and held a 13-9 advantage at the end of the 1st period. Both teams offenses heated up in the 2nd period, with the Warriors building a 30-23 half-time lead. The Warriors would build a 10 point lead in the 3rd period, but the Tigers cut the HLV advantage to 8 at the end of the quarter. The Warrior lead would grow to 15 midway through the final period, but the Tigers cut the HLV lead to 8 with 2:30 to play. The Tigers would get no closer and the Warriors would pick up the win.
Crystal McClenathan continued playing well, scoring 18 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Misty Schafbuch had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Sarah Smith finished the night with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Paige Simmons had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Shelly McWilliams had 2 points and 5 rebounds, while Emily Kriegel had 3 points and 2 rebounds.
HLV girls pick up OT win at BGM
On a night when they battled poor shooting, turnovers and foul trouble, the HLV girl’s basketball team managed to pull out a 50-47 overtime win at BGM Friday night. The win raised the Warriors record to 3-1.
Cold shooting would hamper the Warriors in the early going and the Bears would build a 13-8 lead after one period of play. Things only got worse in the 2nd period as the Warriors continued to struggle offensively. The Bears would eventually build a 22-12 half-time lead.
The Warriors came out on fire to start the 3rd period, going on a 14-0 run to take a 26-22 lead midway through the 3rd period. The Bears would battle back to cut the HLV lead to 33-32 at the end of the quarter. Foul trouble would catch up to the Warriors in the final period, as three starters would foul out early in the quarter. The game would stay close as both teams struggled to score. The Bears would take a 2 point lead with 34 seconds to play, but a late Crystal McClenathan basket would tie the score and send the game into overtime. McClenathan would score 6 quick points in the overtime and the Warriors would hold on for the win.
Sarah Smith led the Warriors with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. McClenathan scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Misty Schafbuch finished with 11 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. Shelly McWilliams had 7 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Paige Simmons scored 1 point had 5 steals and grabbed 6 rebounds. Emily Kriegel scored 3 points, while Randi DeBrower had 1 point and 6 rebounds.
The Warriors will take on a talented Lynnville-Sully team on Friday night in Victor before taking a break for the holidays.
