Beran Signs with Pro Team in Germany
Former HLV standout basketball player Ben Beran has signed a contract to play professional basketball in Germany. He will play for USC Heidelberg in the European Pro A League. USC Heidelberg is one of the top teams in the league and will be seeking its 14th league championship. The European Pro A League is one step below the Euro League, which is the European equivalent of the NBA.
Beran will leave for Germany on August 20th. He will take part in the teams training camp and exhibition games before the start of the regular season in early October. The team will play a regular season schedule consisting of fifty to sixty games, followed by the start of post-season play.
After an outstanding athletic career at HLV in which he excelled in basketball, football and track, Beran played Division I basketball at South Dakota State. He finished 11th on the all-time scoring list at South Dakota State scoring list with 1285 points.
Warriors Stay Busy with Basketball over Summer
A number of HLV basketball players spent the summer competing in AAU tournaments throughout Iowa and one in Chicago. Incoming freshmen Derek Cavin, Dillon McClenathan and Matt Merical played for the Iowa Cavaliers, an Iowa Select 14 and under team. They finished the summer with a 10 and 11 record. The team placed 5th last weekend at the national tournament in Chicago. The team began the summer by competing in a tournament at Fort Dodge. They then earned a 4th place finish in a tournament in Sioux City. The team had their highest finish at the Cedar Falls tournament, placing 2nd.
HLV junior Brenden Kuesel played for the Iowa Blue Devils, an Iowa select college prep division team. They competed at the same tournaments and finished the year with a record of 7-10.
Recent HLV graduate Jared Herzberg and senior Scott Blomme played for the Iowa Huskies, another Iowa select college prep division team. The Huskies played in the same tournaments and compiled an overall record of 14-9, including 3rd place finish in the Chicago tournament. The Huskies coaching staff also had a local flavor, as Scott’s brother Nick helped coach the team.
