MARENGO - Flooding in Benton County has provided one benefit to Iowa County law enforcement with the delivery of a wanted man.  Iowa County is currently jailing prisoners on behalf of Benton County due to problems with flooding in that county.  One man in custody was wanted as part of a December burglary investigation.

On the morning of December 7, 2007, Denny Healey, owner of D&S Repair (formerly Butch’s Repair) in South Amana discovered a secluded rear window at his business had been forced open and his shop had been ransacked.  A sheriff’s investigator discovered evidence at the scene that he linked to an incident that occurred near Homestead the night before.
In that incident, on Dec. 6 at 2 a.m., deputies discovered an abandoned vehicle in Homestead.  The vehicle had been parked illegally and was subsequently towed to the Iowa County Impound Lot.

At 4 a.m. on the same day, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person south of Homestead.  Deputies tracked the unknown individual through the snow across farm fields until they found Joey Neuenkirk, 29, of Vinton, lying in the field.   It appeared to the deputies as though he were trying to hide.  Neuenkirk was questioned and released.

The investigator who responded to the D&S burglary found and followed footprints that went from building to building in Homestead.  Through the course of his investigation, the ICSO investigator had reason to believe Neuenkirk made the footprints.

Later that same day, deputies executed a search warrant at Neuenkirk’s residence, approximately two miles south of Williamsburg.  As a result of the ongoing investigation, the ICSO obtained an arrest warrant charging Neuenkirk with Buglary in the Third Degree for the D&S Repair break-in.  Unfortunately, Neuenkirk could not be found after the issuance of the arrest warrant.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office arrested Neuenkirk on a burglary and theft charge for an incident that occurred in Keystone earlier that day.  Since Iowa County is currently holding Benton County prisoners due to flooding, Neuenkird was delivered to the doorstep of the Iowa County Jail.

As of press time, Neuenkird remains in jail.  His bond on the Benton County charge is $2,000 and his bond on the Iowa County charge is $5,000.  Additionally, he is facing a probation violation charge in Johnson County for Operating While Intoxicated, Second Degree – the bond for the probation violation has been set at $2,000.  At some point, he will be turned over to Johnson County authorities to face that charge.
