Candi Schmieder of Marengo addressed the Democratic National Convention on Monday, Aug. 25 in Denver. Schmieder is the delegate chair for the Iowa County Convention.
Schmieder was the second speaker following Senator Edward Kennedy. She addressed the crowd of more than 4,400 delegates, thousands of spectators and a huge press contingent and a possible viewing audience of millions. The speech was televised live on C-SPAN.
Schmieder spoke of a tragic event she holds in common with Senator Barack Obama: Both lost mothers to cancer. She went on to say that she related to what she saw as the senator’s simple and straightforward message. She credited Obama with prodding her to get involved in the political process. She also stated she enjoyed meeting him and his family at campaign events in Iowa.
She also spoke of being inspired by the senator - specifically in terms of finishing her college degree and moving towards a career in public service.
Schmieder, 39, serves on the Marengo City Council.
