From early returns at presstime, incumbent supervisor Ray Garringer was re-elected to the Iowa County Board of Supervisors with 3,865 votes. Dale Walter narrowly edged out candidate Sandra Cronbaugh to claim the second open seat with 3,146 votes Only 35 votes separated Walter and Cronbaugh.

Supervisor Ric Gerard was defeated in his bid for reelection as an Independent.

DeBoef, Pettengill re-elected to State House

Incumbent Betty DeBoef overwhelmingly defeated challanger Jim Van Scoyoc 64 to 36 percent in State House District 76.

In House District 39, incumbent Dawn Pettengill defeated challenger Terry Hertle with 54.6 to 45.4 percent of the vote. Both State House seats remain in the Republican camp.

In State Senate District 20, Republican Tim Kapucian defeated opponent Randy Braden with 52.9 percent of the vote. Kapucian will take over for Republican John Putney, who announced last year that he would not seek re-election.

In State Senate District 38, incumbent Tom Rielly defeated Republican challenger Michael Hadley with 57 percent of the vote based on early returns.

In Iowa County, Senator Tom Harkin was the overwhelming choice over Republican challenger Christopher Reed. Harkin garnered 60.3 percent of the county vote.

The race for the White House was less clear in the county, however. Based on early returns, the vote between Barack Obama and John McCain was precisely split at 4,173 each.

As of press time, no Iowa County specific breakdowns were available in the District 3 Congressional race. Overall, incumbent Democrat Leonard Boswell sailed to a decisive victory over challenger Kim Schmett with more than 56 percent of the vote based on early returns.
