On Wednesday, August 20th, 2008, Iowa Valley students are heading back to school. For the first three days school will dismiss early at 2:30.

A couple of things parents and students should note this year are that completed registration forms and payments are due to the school by August 19th and that individual as well as family activity tickets for Events are now available.

It should also be noted that the Centerpoint student management system previously used has been replaced by a new system called Powerschool.

A stepped up anti-bullying education program will also be in effect for the safety and education of Iowa Valley Students. This program is meant to help students in their decision making process whether experiencing or witnessing harassment.

Families of students who will be entering junior high should note that seventh grade orientation is being held on August 19th at the high school at 6 p.m. This is a time when students are allowed to find their lockers and classrooms and to meet their new teachers.

An elementary Meet and Greet will be from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Monday, August 18th at the elementary school.

On the first day of school, junior high and high school students will meet first thing that morning in the high school auditorium.

Students will see several new faces in their classrooms and halls as well as on the court and fields of the Iowa Valley School this year. Several new staff members and our new shared Superintendent, Alan Jensen, will help kick off the school year.

In the Math room, students may see Mr. John Bowlin. He will also be an assistant varsity football coach and the head varsity boys basketball coach. Robyn Marlow is teaching in the secondary At-Risk Reading program. Craig Robison is teaching in the secondary Special Education Department.

The Elementary will see Mr. Nick McCool as their new P.E. Teacher. He shares this position with the Deep River-Millersburg School District. Mr. McCool is also the new head varsity softball coach and the junior high girls basketball coach.

Some newly assign positions include, Tamara Patterson as the new varsity cheerleading coach, Curtis McAtee will assist the varsity volleyball team. Eric Henry will be an assistant varsity boys basketball coach. Gary Grafft will be a junior high boys basketball coach.

The elementary school will see a new and improved preschool playground as the new equipment addition is to be constructed and installed on Saturday, August 16th, before the first day of school. There are new classroom computers in all secondary classrooms and even new roofs on portions of both the elementary and the junior-senior high school buildings.

Football fans should be sure to come to the watermelon/barbecue scrimmage at 5:30 p.m. on August 15th. Don’t forget to bring a sport drink to donate for the Gatorade scrimmage on Thursday, August 21st at 6:00 p.m. and don't miss the first home game on August 29th.
Volleyball also begins Monday, August 18th, with the first game on September 2nd at Waco.

With all of these new additions the 2008-2009 school year promises fresh opportunities and new experiences for both the students and the teachers at Iowa Valley High School.
